Back in 1859, Edwin Drake found oil in Titusville, Pennsylvania and began the quest for oil and the beginning of the oil industry as we know it today. Until the turn of the decade oil was primarily used as a source of kerosene which ran lamps for lighting. Once the combustion engine was invented the direction of oil and gas changed dramatically and seeking oil to be refined into gasoline became the chief industry as we know it today and that is petroleum engineering. After the first really big gusher of oil was found in Texas in 1901, the oil yield grew from 2000 barrels a year in the mid 1800’s to over 65 million barrels in the early 1900’s.
Many fields of engineering were being used in the oil and gas industry. As new refining methods were being discovered, chemical engineers working diligently to increase gasoline yields. New compounds were being revealed such as polystyrene and synthetics. In 1928 the first portable drilling rig was mounted on a submersible barge and offshore drilling was born bringing into existence today proficient and state of the art corporations such as Acteon. During the 1940’s more attention was being paid to the advancement in offshore drilling as a vast amount of crude oil was revealing itself under the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. The 1980’s proved to be the decade of exploration in the deepest of seas and subsea corporations including Acteon began to team up multidisciplinary groups of engineers from all fields to comb the miles and miles of subsea terrain for the much sought after liquid gold.
